Police use rickshaw to transport ‘TTP militants’ to court

By ISHAQ TANOLI in Dawn, March 29th, 2015
KARACHI: In what appears to be a major security lapse, police on Saturday brought two suspected militants of the proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan and as many suspected killers of a policeman to an antiterrorism court in a rickshaw and a Suzuki Hi-roof to obtain their remand.

Despite the fact that some alleged militants had managed to escape when they were transported to courts from police stations in rickshaws, Investigation Officer Rana Abdul Jabbar along with two constables brought the two ‘TTP militants’ — Tayyab and Tassaduq — to the ATC-II in a rickshaw.

The IO claimed that he had no other option but to use a rickshaw since no police mobile van was available.

But the careless act embarrassed senior police officials to the extent that they ensured suspension of IO Jabbar of the Orangi Town police station and IO Saleem Naz of the Iqbal Market police station who used a Suzuki Hi-roof to transport two suspects.

A spokesman for the Karachi police said that they were suspended for their “non-professional behaviour”.

Both Tayyab and Tassaduq were arrested on March 27 in the Pirabad area.

The IO told the ATC-II that the suspect Tassaduq was involved in two murder cases while Tayyab was wanted in an extortion case and they were arrested after a shootout.

He sought their custody for questioning and the judge in charge of the ATC-II, Anandram Sairani, remanded the suspects in police custody for one week.

Meanwhile, the same court remanded on Saturday two suspects in judicial custody in a policeman murder case.

Wahid alias Sajjad and Qamar alias Kami have been booked and arrested for allegedly killing head constable Mehboob Alam in March last year within the jurisdiction of the Iqbal Market police station.

After the end of their physical remand, the police brought them in a private vehicle, a Suzuki Hi-roof, to the court.

The court also remanded another suspect in police custody for a week in an extortion case.

The police arrested Mohammad Ashraf and a case was registered against him at the New Karachi Industrial Area police station. The police took the suspect to court in a taxi.http://www.dawn.com/news/1172466/police-use-rickshaw-to-transport-ttp-militants-to-court
