PESHAWAR: The police arrested three Afghan nationals for being involved in mobile phone snatching following an exchange of fire in separate actions on the outskirts of the provincial capital on Tuesday night.
Officials said a mobile team of Pahari Pura police station signaled two men riding on a motorcycle to stop, but they opened fire on the personnel, who had to retaliate, forcing the criminals to flee. They said the policemen chased the fleeing motorcyclists and caught hold of one of them, Raza Khan alias Zalmay.
“Khan, who was also charged in an FIR registered against him in 2002, was injured in the crossfire and admitted to a hospital,” SP Faqeerabad division Usama Ameen Cheema told Dawn.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the city police said a pistol and a cell phone, which the arrested Afghan had snatched from a man in the jurisdiction of Phandu police station, was also recovered from him.
Meanwhile, two more Afghan nationals, allegedly involved in mobile phone snatching, were arrested after an exchange of fire in the jurisdiction of Nasir Bagh police station.
The statement said the phone snatchers had sustained injuries in the crossfire.
The police said they were identified as Ameer Khan alias Mahir and Akbar Khan. Two snatched cell phones were also recovered from them.
