LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), an ally of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, has asked the Buzdar administration to restore free Wi-Fi facility in Punjab.
“Why did Punjab shut the free Wi-Fi facility [for the public]. At a time when Covid-19 is on the rise, closing Wi-Fi facility at the hospitals, educational institutions, railways and bus stations and recreational spots is highly unwise. It [the government] should restore it forthwith,” PML-Q MNA Moonis Elahi said in a tweet on Monday.
Meanwhile, Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) Chairman Azfar Manzoor, in a press release, claimed the facility of free Wi-Fi installed in Punjab for the convenience of the citizens was still active and functional.
He said the facility was available in the public buildings, hospitals, education institutes, parks, government offices and markets etc.
The Punjab government remained fully committed to the provision of free Wi-Fi to the citizens, and would expand the facility to the whole province as part of the ‘Digital Punjab’ vision, Mr Manzoor stated.
Earlier, the government had permanently shut the free Wi-Fi in the province to get rid of the heavy subsidy it had to pay for its provision to the public.
