PM Dahal to give clarification on his recent controversial remarks

Post in The Kathmandu Post, July 07, 2023
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is going to give a clarification regarding a controversial statement he made a few days ago, during the meeting of the House of Representatives.

A meeting of the ruling parties held in Baluwatar on Thursday concluded that the Prime Minister need not resign and should present his views in the Parliament.

CPN (Maoist Centre) Chief Whip Hitraj Pandey said that the leaders at the meeting reached an agreement to this effect and asked the prime minister to furnish his clarification from the Parliament rostrum.

The meetings of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly had been deferred on Wednesday following obstruction from opposition parties, including CPN-UML, Rastriya Swatantra Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party. While all three parties have protested against the prime minister’s remarks the UML has demanded Dahal’s resignation.

The lower House meeting has been called for 3 pm on Friday while the National Assembly meeting will take place Thursday afternoon.

Prime Minister Dahal on Monday had made a controversial remark during the launch of the book ‘Roads to the Valley: The Legacy of Sardar Pritam Singh in Nepal’. Written by Kirandeep Sandhu, the book is an autobiographical piece about Pritam Singh.

Speaking at the event, Dahal appreciated Singh for making several efforts to make him the prime minister.

“He [Singh] visited Delhi many times. He carried out multiple meetings with politicians and friends for the same purpose.”

Leaders accused Dahal of giving a statement that could be inferred that Delhi can decide who to become Nepal’s prime minister.
