Plea for postponing GB polls rejected

GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court on Wednesday rejected an application seeking postponement of upcoming general elections in the region.

Mohammad, a local resident, had submitted an application with court to order postponement of the polls as roads remained block after snowfall in winter season in upper parts of the region besides threat of increasing Covid-19 cases.

After hearing arguments of both the sides, a divisional bench comprising Chief Judge of GB Supreme Appellate Court Syed Irshad Hussain Shah and Judge Wazir Shakeel rejected the petition.

The court directed the Gilgit-Baltistan chief election commissioner and caretaker government to ensure adherence to standard operating procedures devised for Covid-19 during the elections.

The bench also directed the caretaker government to maintain social distancing and ensure wearing of face masks by people during the election activities. The court directed the caretaker government to take steps to keep open Deosai Top, Burzil Top and other routes till November 15.
