Pakistan’s Jamiat Ulema leader criticizes Afghan migrant policy

By Fidel Rahmati- October 8, 2023
Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, the Pakistani Jamiat Ulema Council leader, has criticized the Pakistani government’s policy towards Afghan refugees.

He called on international human rights organizations to investigate the situation of refugees in Pakistan.

The leader of the Pakistani Ulema Council stated in a press conference that the police in this country are attacking Afghan refugees “like wolves.” He further added, “Is this human rights? I urge human rights organizations to come to Pakistan and assess the human rights situation of Afghan migrants.”

The decision of the Pakistani government to deport illegal Afghan migrants has sparked widespread reactions, including calls from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and some other international migration organizations to continue supporting the migrants.

Earlier, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other global migration groups have called on Pakistan to continue assisting migrants who may be at risk.

The UNHCR, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), issued a joint statement on Saturday, urging all countries to cease the forced deportation of Afghan refugees.

The statement underlines Afghanistan’s numerous human rights challenges, particularly for women and girls, and warns of adverse consequences for those compelled to leave their homeland.

These migration organizations have also expressed concern about the security threats faced by returnees and have requested Pakistan to facilitate the voluntary return of Afghans under dignified conditions, emphasizing the importance of a cooperative effort to establish a comprehensive and sustainable registration mechanism to prevent human rights violations associated with forced returns.
