Pakistan lobbying to get a role in IOFS: by Atif Khan in The Nation, Apr 14, 2016

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan is lobbying to get a role in the Islamic Organisation for Food Security.

According to officials, Minister for National Food Security and Research, Sikander Hayat Khan Boson during his meeting with the Ambassador of Kazakhstan Bakhitbek Shabarbayev on Wednesday discussed prospects of the upcoming international events.

In the meeting, the upcoming OIC Ministers’ conference in Astana was discussed along with the Agriculture Ministers’ conference. The first session of General Assembly of the Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS) is scheduled on 26-28 April 2016.

Although Pakistan has not joined the IOFS but Kazakhstan is pursuing the matter and hence invited Islamabad to attend the first session.

The Islamic Organisation for Food Security is a new organisation established within the framework of the seventh session of the Ministerial Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on food security and agricultural development.

Kazakhstan will head the organisation for the first three years. The rules of financial procedures, personnel management and budget of the organisation for the next five years will be stipulated at the session. Pakistan has supported the establishment of IOFS.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has given approval to the minister’s participation in economically important event.

The minister in his meeting with Ambassador of Kazakhstan expressed hope that relations between the two countries would strengthen and he would meet with the Kazakhstan’s agriculture minister and discuss matters of mutual importance.

In the said meeting it was resolved by both sides that the important decisions would be taken and the upcoming OIC conference would not only be a powerful forum for Pakistan but will bring the two countries closer. http://nation.com.pk/national/14-Apr-2016/pakistan-lobbying-to-get-a-role-in-iofs
