Pak-Afghan transporters call off strike

LANDIKOTAL: After the several rounds of talks with Pak-Afghan border officials, transporters in Pakistan and Afghanistan conditionally called off the wheel jam strike on the fourth day.

Political tehsildar, Torkham, Shamsul Islam, said transporters in Pakistan and Afghanistan were on strike against the imposition of tax by the Afghan border authorities. He said hundreds of trucks were parked on both sides of the border to record their protest. The transporters have been demanding of the Afghan government to withdraw the tax, he added.

The official said a joint jirga of transporters from Pakistan, Afghanistan and border officials held at Torkham convinced the transporters to call off the strike. Transporters leaders said they called off the strike after receiving assurance that the issue would be taken up with the political agent of Khyber Agency and high-ups in Afghanistan. Shakir Afridi, president, All Transporters Union, said that if the matter was not resolved they would again give a call for strike. Meanwhile, long queues of trucks were seen moving from and to Afghanistan via Torkham border.https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/172194-Pak-Afghan-transporters-call-off-strike
