President Ashraf Ghani’s appointment of Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani, former Head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), as Afghanistan ambassador to Spain has been challenged by the Office of the Chief Executive.

While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not yet comment on the appointment of Nuristani, the Office of the Chief Executive (CEO) said the step was at odds with the commitments of the National Unity Government (NUG) to fight corruption. It urged President Ghani to retract his decision.

“We hope that the selection is not true. And if it is true, we expect that Nuristani’s alleged involvement in corruption and election problems be taken into account. The decision to appoint him as ambassador should be canceled. We promised the people and international community that we will fight corruption, but such an appointment will undermine our commitments and, hence, the decision should be canceled,” deputy spokesman to the CEO Jawed Faisal said.

A number of political experts called the appointment a sign of political dealing that give veracity to reports of wide-ranging electoral fraud in favor of Ashraf Ghani during 2014 presidential election.

“President Ghani appointed his uncle as an ambassador who was almost retiring. With the appointment of Nuristani and the continued employment of other IEC staff still undermining their duty, the NUG leaders are entering another ball game,” said Siddiq Patman a political analyst.

A number of analysts and parliament members criticized government for appointments of relatives and those based on political relationships.

“Such appointments will have bad consequences and Afghanistan will lose its credibility in public opinion and the world,” said Ghulam Farooq Majroh, a parliament member.

The National Unity Government has appointed nearly 15 ambassadors in the past two years. According to experts, there are few among them who have been appointed on merit. Most have been appointed on the basis of their political and ethnic relationships. http://www.tolonews.com/en/afghanistan/26201-nuristanis-appointment-as-ambassador-challenged-by-ceo
