No Early Termination Of NUG: Abdullah by Mir Abid Joenda in Tolo News, April 11, 2016 at 20:00hrs

CEO of the National Unity Government (NUG) Abdullah Abdullah said on Monday that speculation over an early termination of the NUG comes as a surprise.

Speaking at the Council of Ministers Meeting on Monday morning, Abdullah said critics who think the NUG has only six months left are wrong and that they obviously do not know what the national unity government agreement, signed in 2014 between President Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah, entails.

“Some of our people who can’t be called an opposition seemed to have never heard of NUG political agreement,” Abdullah said.

“I wish those people who think of becoming part of political future for Afghanistan could read the agreement.”

“This agreement is vital for the future of the country and our politicians were supposed to read it carefully and know what is in there,” he said.

He pointed out that during U.S Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to Afghanistan on Saturday he reaffirmed the US’s commitment to long term support of Afghanistan. He said that the continued support of the international community for Afghanistan was needed – especially for the NUG to fulfill its commitments to the nation.

His remarks came after Kerry said during his visit that the legal tenure of the NUG is for five years and will not end soon. This sparked an outcry on Sunday by a number of politicians, many of whom claimed the comments were nothing more than a clear interference in Afghanistan’s politics by the U.S.

“There was no need for John Kerry to give legitimacy to the NUG, if the government leaders implemented their commitments they made to the people,” said MP Zahir Sadat.

Another MP, Ghulam Sarwar Osmani, said: “We believe John Kerry’s move is a clear interference into Afghan government. Afghanistan has a law and there is no need for a foreigner to give legitimacy to our government.”

Bringing of reforms in the electoral system, holding of Loya Jirga and the implementation of necessary amendments in the constitution and clarifying the future position of the CEO were agreements which were made by Ghani and Abdullah back in 2014. However, a number of political analysts believe that both leaders have failed in terms of the implementation of this agreement. http://www.tolonews.com/en/afghanistan/24711-no-early-termination-of-nug-abdullah-
