Inspector General of Police Javed Patwari said the police will be on high alert with the February 8 verdict on Khaleda Zia’s graft case looming. This came in reply to a journalist’s query regarding the police’s position on the national election at a press conference at the Police Headquarters Media Center on Thursday.

The IGP further said the Election Commission is responsible for conducting the polls, while the police’s responsibility is to ensure public security. The police are meant to take on challenges every day in the line of duty, and they will perform their duties with professionalism and within the law.

The police chief said militancy and drugs are the primary challenges for the police. He said operations are underway to combat militancy and the police will continue using intelligence to lead their work. Regarding drugs, he said that they will not be able to stop narcotics until the demand for them lessens, stating that It is not the task of the police force alone to stop the menace of narcotics, but of people from all stages and walks of life.

While asked about the crimes committed by the police themselves, the IGP said the police will not take responsibility for any of its members who may be involved in crime. The culprit will be treated as an accused criminal and action will be taken against them as per the law.http://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/dhaka/2018/02/01/new-igp-khaleda-verdict-police/
