CHARSADDA / BANNU / PESHAWAR: An acting colonel of the Pakistan Army was shot dead on Ring Road within the jurisdiction of Pishtakhara police station on Friday afternoon.
According to the police, Tariq Ghafoor owned a petrol station and spent some time there on a daily basis. He had left the filling station and was crossing the road to go to the mosque when he was ambushed. The gunmen escaped after committing the crime.
A security official confirmed the deceased was an acting colonel in the Pakistan Army, saying the victim was currently on leave and studying at University of Peshawar.
He rejected the possibility of this being act of militancy. As per the official, Tariq had several family disputes which may have led to his murder.
However, a banned militant outfit claimed responsibility in a communiqué to the media. The militant group claimed the colonel was targeted by sharpshooters.
AAC injured
The Bannu additional assistant commissioner and his two guards were injured in Khanmai, Charsadda on Thursday night.
AAC Daulat Khan was travelling from Bannu to Malakand, along with his gunman Abdullah Noor, and driver Wahidur Rehman.
The Khanmai police signaled them to spot but the driver did not listen and sped on. This prompted the police to open fire at the vehicle. As a result, the tyres burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car overturned and all three passengers were injured.
The wounded passengers were rushed to the hospital where they are being treated. The police and district authorities arrived on the site to start an investigation.
On Thursday night, a Frontier Corps soldier Rehanullah was found murdered in his car in Jharga Village of Chamkani, Peshawar.
According to the police, Rehanullah, a resident of Nabi Banda, Nowshera, was found dead in his vehicle.
“We believe he has been killed by one of his friends, but it [would be] premature to jump to any conclusions,” an official of the local police station said.
