report in Dhaka Tribune, Oct 19, 2023
The Awami League has tasked two of its presidium members, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, with coordinating its Dhaka South and North units as the ruling party plans continuous programs in the run-up to the upcoming election.
Mirza Azam, organizing secretary of the Awami League’s Dhaka divisional unit, confirmed the assignment of the two leaders to media on Wednesday and said: “Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya will coordinate Dhaka South and Jahangir Kabir Nanak Dhaka North.”
Party sources said that after Wednesday’s rally at Baitul Mukarram, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader instructed Mirza Azam to inform Maya and Nanak of the party’s decision.
Maya was general secretary of the united Dhaka city Awami League for a long time while Nanak served as chairman of Jubo League, the youth wing of the Awami League, when the party was in opposition.
Both leaders played vital roles in the party’s street movement in Dhaka at the time.
According to sources, Mirza Azam said: “There is a movement and struggle of the opposition party ahead. Both leaders have been tasked with coordinating our party activities there. Both of them have political experience in the past, which is why they have been given new responsibilities.”
In recent times lack of coordination has been a common problem at the Awami League’s political programs in Dhaka.
Sources said this decision has been taken to strengthen the city wings of the ruling party.
The Dhaka Metropolitan North and South Awami League conference was held in 2019. Abu Ahmed Mannafi and Humayun Kabir were elected president and general secretary in Dhaka South, while Sheikh Bazlur Rahman and SM Mannan Kochi became president and general secretary in Dhaka North.
Almost a year later, in November 2020, the full committee of the two city units was formed.
However, these leaders failed to form thana and ward committees.
