report in Dhaka Tribune, Dec 18, 2023
The Maldives government has lifted the ban on the recruitment of unskilled workers from Bangladesh.
Now, unskilled workers from Bangladesh would have job opportunities in the country, said Maldives’ Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology in a statement on Sunday.
In this regard, Counsellor (Labour) and Head of the Embassy of Bangladesh High Commission in Maldives Md Sohel Parvez said the decision to reopen the labour market for Bangladeshis in the Maldives is very favorable.
Further details will be provided by the mission at a later date. Everything will be done according to the proper rules, he added.
The official added that new visas will be introduced and at the same time, those who are not documented will also need to be legalized. “If the employer wants, he can apply for a work permit for Bangladeshis in the expatriate system. Everyone should be aware of the visa issues. You can’t fall into the trap of a broker.”
In September 2019, Maldives imposed a ban on recruiting unskilled workers from Bangladesh.
Despite the then economic minister of Maldives Fayyaz Ismail saying the ban was for a year, the ban was later extended.
