Major General (Retd) Syed Mohammad Ibrahim, chairman of the Bangladesh Kalyan Party, has been expelled from the organization by its other leaders.
The information was disclosed in a statement from the Bangladesh Kalyan Party on Sunday.
The statement revealed that Ibrahim was expelled for joining the electoral alliance called the United Front without prior notice, a move considered to oppose the party’s ideology.
According to Article 20 (E) of the constitution of the Bangladesh Kalyan Party, Major General (Retd) Syed Mohammad Ibrahim has been expelled from all posts, the statement said.
Shamsuddin Parvez, one of the vice-chairmen, has been assigned the role of acting chairman with the majority’s consent.
In the first meeting under the leadership of acting chairman Shamsuddin Parvez, the party decided to actively participate in street movements with the 12-party alliance to accelerate the “anti-dictatorship movement.”
The central executive committee of the Bangladesh Kalyan Party has been reconstituted with dedicated members.
The statement also announced the permanent expulsion of the party’s former secretary-general Abdul Awal Mamun and former additional secretary-general Abdullah Al Hasan Shakib. They were expelled for persuading the former chairman to participate in the 12th national parliamentary election by forming the United Front.
Regarding the expulsion, Syed Mohammad Ibrahim said that there is no issue if they are with the 12-party alliance, but they should be aware of the rules issued by the Election Commission before using the name Kalyan Party.
Shamsuddin Parvez said that they expelled Ibrahim following party rules, as his decision to participate in the election without consulting the majority tarnished the party’s longstanding protests.
