KP-GB boundary dispute unresolved: report in Dawn, August 13th, 2016

MANSEHRA: A boundary dispute between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan remained resolved as the representatives of one of the rival tribes didn’t show up in Kohistan on Friday to finalise the agreement.

Harban tribe of Kohistan and Thor tribe of Chelas had agreed last month in Abbottabad at the intervention of the provincial government that their representatives would meet in Kohistan on Aug 12 to settle all issues regarding the boundary dispute once and for all.

However, Thor tribesmen didn’t reach the dialogue venue in Shitial area of Kohistan.

The tribesmen of Harban and Basha, who stayed put all through the day, were irked by the act of Thor tribesmen.

“We announce the end of talks of all sorts with Thor tribes from now on. We will decide our future line of action in a grand jirga to be held on August 14 here,” Harban elder Assadullah Qureshi told his tribesmen.

He said the people of Harban tribe had joined talks to end the enmity, which had so far claimed the lives of their tribesmen and one of their rivals in 2014, but the rivals considered it their weakness.

“We are ready to face all consequences but can’t trust our rivals who breached the agreement and didn’t show up,” he said.

The disputed territory of almost six kanals of land on the KP-GB boundary has been controlled by the federal government through Frontier Constabulary since 2014 when four tribesmen, three of Harban and one of Thor were killed in an exchange of fire.

The dispute is also a big hurdle to the execution of the 4500MW Diamer-Basha hydropower power project even though the federal government has made agreement with international agencies about its financing.http://www.dawn.com/news/1277267/kp-gb-boundary-dispute-unresolved
