KKH remains blocked for 2nd day  : The News, Dec 15, 2014

MANSEHRA: The Karakoram Highway, which was blocked for traffic on Saturday in protest against arrest of nine political and social activists, remained blocked on second consecutive day on Sunday, causing hardships for passengers stranded on both sides of highway.

The Kohistan Police had arrested Mohammad Hassan, Mohammad Manzoor, Hifzur Rehman, Maulana Waliullah, Maulana Abdul Rehman, Abeedullah, Fazal Allai, Liaqat Ali and Abdul Jabbar after deputy commissioner Kohistan issued their arrest warrants under section 3 of maintenance of public order on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner Zafarul Islam had issued arrest orders of nine political and social workers, who had blocked the KKH to protest death of a young girl in a local hospital because of reported lack of medical facilities on November 30 this year.

Following the arrest of the accused, the residents took to the streets and blocked the KKH.The protesters constituted a 30-member committee to hold parleys with the district administration over the issue. However, they threatened to block the highway at another three places in the district if the arrested political and social activists were not released today.

The traders also observed shutdown strike against the arrest of nine people and demanded their immediate release.When contacted, DIG Akhtar Hayat Khan Gandapur said that hopefully the road would reopen as the district administration was in contact with protesters for the purpose.
