Former President Hamid Karzai and Raffaella Lodice, the EU envoy in Afghanistan, met to discuss the critical issue of education in Afghanistan, particularly for women and girls.
Karzai pleaded with the EU diplomat to advance education in the country.
Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, they have imposed several suppressive policies and practices by which girls and women are barred from attending schools beyond sixth grade and universities.
Meanwhile, they banned Afghan women’s working with aid agencies since last December amid a dire humanitarian crisis.
In addition, in a recent move, the de facto authorities banned beauty salons nationwide.
The decision, confronted with massive criticism by international and national organizations, asked the group to lift the restriction on women immediately.
Since the Taliban came to power, women have been completely swept from the public space, restricted at home, and banned from gyms, parks, baths and other public spaces.
Karzai also met with Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, and her team. They talked about the value of education and demanded that female-only academic institutions reopen. https://www.khaama.com/karzai-and-eu-envoy-discuss-gilrs-education-in-afghanistan/
