Kabul not interested in MoU on Afghan SIMs: By Mehtab Haider in the News, Jqan 23, 2016

ISLAMABAD: To curb the Afghan SIMs used in undertaking terrorist activities in Pakistan, Islamabad has offered Kabul to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) but got no response.

Despite reminders given by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Afghanistan gave a cold shoulder to the Pakistani offer for establishing an agreed mechanism to overcome the issues related to spillover effects of mobile signals in the bordering areas of both countries.

“To address the spillover effects of mobile signals at the Pak-Afghan border, the PTA approached the Afghan Embassy in Pakistan through the Foreign Office in August, 2014 to resolve this issue,” the PTA stated in a statement on Friday.

The PTA proposed an MoU to be signed between the two governments to resolve the current and any future issues related to mobile phone towers and cross-border flow of signals. However, despite several reminders, no response has been received till now, the PTA added. It may also be added that investigations into the Bacha Khan University attack are underway. It may be mentioned that using Afghan SIMs, one can call any number in Pakistan from any part of Afghanistan. http://www.thenews.com.pk/print/93185-Kabul-not-interested-in-MoU-on-Afghan-SIMs
