Seven “commercial attachés” have been appointed to three countries since the Islamic Emirate took power in Afghanistan.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MoIC), these attachés have been appointed in Pakistan, Iran, and most recently Turkmenistan, with the aim of strengthening economic cooperation with various nations.

The Ministry spokesperson Akhundzada Abdul Salam Javad said that Mohammad Haroon Saeedi was recently appointed as the commercial attaché in Turkmenistan, and it is expected that a commercial attaché will be appointed in Istanbul soon as well.

“As of now, we have seven business attachés in various nations. One commercial attaché in Quetta, one in Peshawar, one in Karachi, and another in Islamabad in Pakistan. We have an attaché in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, and one in Tehran, Iran,” added Javad.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Economy considers the appointment of commercial attachés important in attracting foreign investments and improving economic relations.

“Commercial attachés in our political offices play an important and essential role in attracting foreign investment in Afghanistan,” said Abdul Latif Nazari, a deputy of the Ministry of Economy.

Some economists believe that the existence of commercial attachés is crucial to regional cooperation and that professional attachés may significantly boost the nation’s economy by attracting international investment and introducing domestic products.

“If they choose the commercial attachés based on their expertise, it would be a positive move for the trade sector and would enhance the commerce sector in the nations where these attachés are heading,” Sayed Masoud, an economist told TOLOnews.

“They help with business issues abroad and help the country’s economy in addition to marketing for the country’s products and setting up exhibitions,” said Aziz Marij, a former diplomat told TOLOnews.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has diplomatic ties with a number of nations, including China, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Russia, but so far no commercial attachés have been appointed in some of these countries.
