report in Dhaka Tribune 25 Dec 2023,
A Dhaka court has set January 1 to deliver its verdict in a case filed against Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, chairman of Grameen Telecom, and three others over labour law violation.
Dhaka Labour Court 3 judge Sheikh Marina Sultana fixed the date on Sunday.
Dr Yunus as well as the three other accused–Grameen Telecom CEO Md Ashraful Hassan, Managing Director M Shahjahan and Trustee Nurjahan Begum–were present in court at the time.
Their lawyer, Abdullah Al Mamun, said the prosecution could not prove the allegations against his clients, hoping the court would acquit them.
Meanwhile, Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan from the state’s side said: “We have been able to prove the allegations against the accused. Hopefully, they will be punished.”
Arifuzzaman, an inspector at the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, filed the case with the labour court on September 9, 2021.
Allegations were made for non-deposit of dividends to the workers’ welfare fund, non-permanent employment of workers and non-encashment of holidays.
