Jamshed Dasti applies for registration of his party AMIR WASIM in Dawn, May 25th, 2016

ISLAMABAD: Jamshed Dasti, an independent member of the National Assembly from Muzaffargarh who is fond of keeping himself in the limelight through controversial statements, submitted an application to the Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday for enlistment of his party with the name of the Pakistan Awami Raaj.

Mr Dasti, who had acquired prominence in a fake degree case during the previous PPP government, has requested the ECP to allocate ‘Jharroo’ (broom) as the election symbol for his party.

He has named himself as the convener of the party and has submitted a copy of the party’s constitution, details of intra-party elections and manifesto with the application. He has shown “donations” as the source of income for the party.

Talking to reporters outside the ECP office after submitting the application, Mr Dasti said he had decided to form his own party after being disappointed with the two major opposition parties — the PPP and PTI.

Mr Dasti, who had quit the PPP just before the 2013 general elections and voted for Nawaz Sharif at the time of his election as the prime minister, said earlier that PTI chairman Imran Khan called Asif Zardari “thief” but now “the former has become the latter’s subordinate”.

Rejecting the parliamentary committee on Panamagate Commission, he said that he would organise a hunger strike camp in front of the Parliament House to protest over the scam after Eidul Fitr.

He also said that he would soon lodge an FIR against US President Barack Obama for carrying out drone strikes inside Pakistan.
