During a press conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani emphasized the importance of monthly assessments of the water level in the Helmand River to ensure Iran’s water quota is met.
Kanani underscored that Tehran’s technical delegation is actively and seriously addressing this issue.
“Continuing to send regular monthly information and periodical visits, water measurement information and indicators, timely visits to this station and accurate determination of the amount of water in the days of water scarcity and drought, the amount of Iran’s demand from the Helmand River should be measured correctly and fairly,” he said.
“We consider the visit of the technical delegation of Iran as committed to the treaty of 1973 regarding the Helmand River issue,” Kanani added.
In the meantime, the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan has not commented on Kanani’s statements. However, Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting foreign minister, recently conveyed that Tehran’s water concern has been successfully addressed.
Last month, the Taliban administration permitted the Iranian technical delegation to assess water levels in the Helmand River.
Following their visit to the water level indicator at Deh Rawud, Afghanistan, the Tehran delegation openly recognized a substantial decline in the river’s water level compared to previous periods.
The report highlights the stark presence of a severe drought within the country. However, Iranian authorities, in their pursuit of securing their water rights from the Helmand River waters, are advocating for a regular monthly assessment of the river’s status.
