Iran calls on Taliban to establish inclusive Govt in Afghanistan

By Fidel Rahmati in The Khaama Press online, Sept 1, 2023
Iran’s Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Seyed Rasoul Mousavi, emphasized that the Taliban holds a global obligation to establish an inclusive government in Afghanistan.

In response to a speech by Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, where he criticized countries pressuring the Taliban regarding the formation of an inclusive government, Mousavi articulated that the Taliban bears a worldwide responsibility to create a government that includes diverse stakeholders in Afghanistan.

Mousavi’s statement underscores the international context surrounding the Taliban’s efforts to establish a government in Afghanistan while highlighting the significance of inclusivity as a critical factor for stability and cooperation within the country and across the global community.

Speaking at the Taliban’s religious scholars gathering in Kabul, Muttaqi said that the Taliban has fewer prisoners than executions carried out in those countries and asked, “Do you have an inclusive government?”

While not specifying a country, Muttaqi’s speech alludes to Iran, which has consistently urged the Taliban to establish an inclusive government in Afghanistan.

The Iranian official shared Muttaqi’s speech video on social media platform X, asserting that the Taliban cannot evade international responsibility by narrowing the matter to bilateral concerns. He emphasized that achieving peace, stability, security, and sustainable
development hinges on forming an inclusive government in Afghanistan.

Mousavi stated that establishing an inclusive government aligns with UN Security Council Resolutions 2513 and 2593 and the consensus reached during foreign ministers’ meetings in Pakistan, Iran, China, and Uzbekistan, emphasizing regional support for this approach.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, has consistently underscored the imperative of establishing an “inclusive” government as the definitive solution to Afghanistan’s multifaceted challenges. His unwavering emphasis rests on the active participation of diverse ethnic groups within the country. By advocating for inclusivity, Amir-Abdollahian aims to comprehensively address Afghanistan’s complex crises and foster an environment of stability and cooperation.

Recognizing the intricate interplay of Afghanistan’s ethnic diversity and political stability, Amir-Abdollahian’s emphasis on an inclusive government aligns with the vision that transcends immediate conflicts and envisions a harmonious future.

Afghanistan’s global isolation persists due to the lack of recognition for the Taliban regime, which arises from multiple factors. Among these are concerns about establishing an inclusive government and upholding human rights, notably those of women and girls. The absence of these critical elements has led to the withholding of recognition by any country thus far.
