ICRC suspends operation in Ghazni: report in Khaama Press, Feb 18 2016, 10:33 pm

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has suspended its operation in central Ghazni province.

ICRC says the decision was taken following the abduction of its local staffers by unidentified gunmen in this province.

Ahmad Ramin Ayaz, ICRC spokesperson has told BBC that the five staff members were kidnapped while they were traveling between two districts.

Due to security reasons, Ayaz did not give further details but said that efforts have been made for safe release of the hostages.

ICRC has been operating in Afghanistan for 30 years.

The tasks ICRC does in Afghanistan include protecting detainees and helps them maintain contact with their families, monitors the conduct of hostilities and prevents IHL violations, helps wounded and disabled people, supports hospitals, improves water and sanitation, promotes IHL and supports the Afghan Red Crescent.http://www.khaama.com/icrc-suspends-operation-in-ghazni-4586
