Hizb-e-Islami Rejects AIHRC’s Demand by Tariq Majidi in TOLOnews.com, Oct 7, 2016

Hizb-e-Islami has said that the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission’s (AIHRC) demand that its leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar apologize to the Afghan people is irrational.

Days after the peace deal, AIHRC had asked Hekmatyar to apology to the Afghan people who lost their loved ones due to Hizb-e-Islami activities.

“Demanding apologies does not relate only to the past activities of Hizb-e-Islami. Demanding of apologies by the AIHRC only from the Hizb-e-Islami is unfair and irrational. The AIHRC should prove to the Afghan people what Hizb-e-Islami has done. If the AIHRC want an apology, then it should tell the people what it has done in 13 years regarding human rights violations,” said Mohammad Nadir Afghan, a spokesman for Hizb-e-Islami.

However, Hizb-e-Islami has said they are ready to respond about its past military activities to the Afghan people in a free and fair court.

The peace deal with Hekmatyar had mixed reactions. Government officials have said that it will reduce the violence in the country, while others said it is just giving privileges to one accused of killing Afghans.

AIHRC says that Hizb-e-Islami has accepted the constitution and should accept the activities of AIHRC as well and like General Dostum, head of the National Islamic Movement party, apologize to the people who suffered in the civil war, especially in Kabul city.

“As the primary steps for justice, they should acknowledge the problems that occurred in the past. Acknowledgement is a primary step. This is necessary from citizenship and Afghan bravery aspects,” said Rafiullah Bidar, spokesman of the AIHRC in response to the Hizb-e-Islami remarks.

Despite these concerns, security departments have said that Hizb-e-Islami fighters were not involved in recent fights in Kunduz and Baghlan.

“I don’t think that Hizb-e-Islami men have taken part in the recent fights. They have signed an agreement with the government and both parties respect it. Even if a single anti-government element wants to join the peace process, we welcome it,” said Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for the ministry of defense.

Hekmatyar has said that one of his pre-conditions for coming to Kabul is that his name should be removed from the international blacklist. Despite this, Hizb-e-Islami members are trying to get impunity for him as well. http://www.tolonews.com/en/afghanistan/27680-hizb-e-islami-rejects-aihrcs-demand
