Hefajat out to malign country’s secular image, Says Shahriar Kabir

Report in The daily star, June 03, 2017
Qawmi madrasa-based Islamist organisation Hefajat-e-Islam is trying to malign the secular image of the country by demanding demolition of sculptures, war crimes trial campaigner Shahriar Kabir said yesterday.

He also criticised the government, saying the government acted tough after the Hefajat-led May 5 mayhem at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka in 2013, but it has moved away from the position. “The government should explain why it has become soft on a fundamentalist and terrorist organisation like Hefajat.”

Addressing a press conference, the president of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee also demanded a judicial investigation into the bribery allegation against Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, a Narayanganj schoolteacher, who was forced to do squats holding ears in presence of Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Salim Osman last year.

The Committee organised the conference on “Sluggishness of War Crimes Trial and Exhilaration of Fundamental-Communal Evil Forces”, at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity.

Responding to recent remarks of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, Shahriar said the Nirmul Committee did not have any political agenda; but rather it campaigned for trial of war criminals and a ban on religion based politics.

During the hearing of a review petition of war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee, the chief justice commented that a prosecutor went to a meeting of the Nirmul Committee, “which works for political agenda”.

Speaking at the same programme, former Supreme Court Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik said the prosecutors of the international crimes tribunal worked under the law ministry, so the chief justice remarks were unwarranted.

The Bar Council is the guardian of lawyers, and if a prosecutor has committed any misconduct by attending the meeting of the Nirmul Committee, the council should look into the matter, he said.

Artist Hashem Khan and Sculptor Ferdousi Priyabhashini also spoke at the conference.http://www.thedailystar.net/city/hefajat-out-malign-countrys-secular-image-1414834
