Ghani, Abdullah Meet Face-to-Face Amid Political Rift: by Sharif Amiry in Tolo News, 17 August 2016

After a week of political turmoil, President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah held a one-on-one meeting Wednesday in an attempt to ease tensions between them and resolve their disagreements – that sparked political uncertainty in the country over the past few days.

Delegations from both sides appear to have brokered today’s meeting between the two leaders.

The talks are expected to continue on Thursday and Friday.

Referring to the Ghani-Abdullah squabble, the CEO’s office said in a statement that disagreements between the two officials came about over certain job functions.

“Recent discussions have focused on the reforms and better performance of the government,” said Jawed Faisal, deputy spokesman to CEO.

Analysts have said that from a legal perspective the president and the chief executive need to work together to avoid similar issues in future.

“The credibility of government leaders is not complete without each other, they are like a coin with two sides,” said Abdul Ghayour Barshan, head of Afghanistan Lawyers Union.

The political rift between Ghani and Abdullah sparked major concerns in the country with some rallying to reunite the two officials.

“If they (government leaders) remain weak … they will move toward failure and will face credibility questions,” said Gul Ahmad Madadzai, deputy head of Afghanistan Lawyers Association.

The Afghan people have constantly pushed the government leaders to work together and address national issues.

In a statement released Wednesday evening, the presidential palace confirmed the meeting between the two officials.

“The meeting took place in a cordial environment, the president after hearing the remarks of the chief executive decided that he will seriously focus on his remarks in the next meeting,” the press release read.

The meeting was also attended by Ghani’s second VP Mohammad Sarwar Danish and Abdullah’s first deputy Mohammad Khan. www.tolonews.com/en/afghanistan/26789-ghani-abdullah-meet-face-to-face-amid-political-rift
