Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-6) has arrested a fugitive, convicted to a life sentence in a case over the attack on the motorcade of then opposition leader and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, from Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira.

The detainee was identified as Ripon Hossain, a resident of the Kalaroa area.

RAB-6 Commander Lt Col Mostak Ahmed, in a press conference on Friday, said on information, a team of the force conducted a drive at Ripon’s house at around 8pm on Thursday and apprehended him from a secretly constructed tunnel under a bed inside his house.

Ripon Hossain was handed over to the Kalaroa police station in Satkhira, he added.

On August 30, 2002, Sheikh Hasina, the opposition leader at the time, visited Satkhira Sadar Hospital to meet the wife of a freedom fighter who had been a victim of rape.

On her way back to Jessore around 11:40am, a group of BNP leaders launched an attack on a passenger bus in front of the Kalaroa upazila BNP office.

During the assault, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the district Awami League president, journalists, and ten other individuals were subjected to physical violence.

On April 18, a Satkhira court handed down a life imprisonment sentence to four individuals, including BNP central leader Habibul Islam Habib and Ripon Hossain, in connection with the case.

Furthermore, 44 other accused individuals received a seven-year prison term from the same court.
