Afghanistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai who is leading his country in the preparatory discussions with Pakistan, U.S. and China for reviving the stalled peace talks with Taliban says the nation should witness a change in two months.
While talking to a press conference on Tuesday about his recent visit to Islamabad for the quadrilateral meeting, Karzai said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has prepared a roadmap for peace talks which is also okayed by other stakeholders of the process. It has three steps, pre-negotiations, direct talks and implementation, he added.
A reporter asked him if Taliban are willing to join the peace process, Karzai responded, “They have tendency towards the peace process and I hope this would turn into a serious action.”
He also said if Taliban do not come from one address they will talk to them separately, giving three names, group of Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, those following Mullah Rasoul and the Haqqani network.
While responding a question about a possible timeframe for the peace, Karzai said the peace process itself may get some times but the nation should see a change in January and February.
Karzai added that every mean would be used against those not joining the peace process.
About Pakistan’s sincerity in the peace process, Karzai said Pakistan has been told that people of Afghanistan do not have the patience of last year.
The country breached trust of Afghanistan in 2015 by saying that the peace process was moving forward with the blessing of Mullah Mohammad Omar but he had died years ago. When the news of Mullah Omar’s death surfaced in July 2015 ties between Kabul and Islamabad severed once again.
After months of harsh remarks between the two countries, a delegation from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa arrived in Kabul and convinced President Ghani to re-enter into talks with Islamabad.
He then met PM Mohammad Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan at the sideline of the Heart of Asia conference and agreed to revive the stalled peace talks with Taliban after receiving Islamabad’s promise of sincerity.
To resume the process, Pakistan hosted first round of preparatory meeting on Monday and the second round is scheduled to be hosted by Kabul on Jan 18.
