The 58-party United National Alliance (UNA) faced a setback in its first meeting on Monday as many of its leaders opposed to the alliance chief HM Ershad’s decisions.
However, the alliance’s spokesperson said the leaders agreed to accept some of the decisions.
The meeting was held at HM Ershad’s political office in Banani with alliance spokesperson and Jatiya Party Secretary General Ruhul Amin Hawlader in the chair.
According to a source who was at the meeting, Ershad proposed to include two more parties in the alliance; one of the parties is currently with Awami League-led 14-party alliance and the other with BNP-led 20-party combine.
Several UNA leaders opposed to the move, saying that it would not be good for the alliance’s future. They criticised Ershad’s proposal, asking him when his party members will resign from the Cabinet.
Ershad did not reply to the question, the source said.
After the meeting, Ruhul Amin Hawlader told the Dhaka Tribune that Ershad was also unhappy and disappointed with the abrupt opposition of certain alliance leaders at the very first meeting.
He said, however, several other issues were discussed and the alliance agreed to the decisions made. They decided to start there political activities from Ramadan by organising an Iftar party and preparing an election manifesto for the next parliamentary polls.
The meeting also decided to form a liaison committee within three months that would include divisions, districts, upazilas, municipalities and also union levels, the source added.http://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/politics/2017/05/16/ershad-opposed-first-meeting-58-party-alliance/
