Li Xiaopeng, the elder son of former Chinese premier Li Peng, has been appointed as the country’s new transport minister, Xinhua said.
China’s President Xi Jinping and the National People’s Congress Standing Committee had announced on Saturday that Yang Chuantang had been removed from the post and replaced by Li, who was previously governor of Shanxi province, it said.
The announcement confirmed the South China Morning Post’s report on August 28 that Li had been tipped to replace Yang.
When Li left his former post on August 31 it was announced that Lou Yangsheng, deputy party chief in Shanxi – viewed as one of Xi’s allies as both worked in Zhejiang province – would take up the role of Shanxi’s acting governor.
Li, the former chairman of the electricity giant, Huaneng Power, became the resource-rich province’s first-ranked deputy governor in 2010 and took over as governor two years later.
He is the lowest ranked of the Central Committee’s 171 alternate members, meaning that he received the fewest number of votes out of those members in an internal election in 2012.
His father, Li Peng was acting premier and then premier from 1987 to 1998 and was understood to have a strong power base in the state sector.
Li Xiaolin, Li Xiaopeng’s sister, was transferred to the role of vice-president of China Datang Corporation last July after spending 12 years in senior executive positions at the state-owned China Power Investment Corporation.http://www.scmp.com/news/china/policies-politics/article/2014247/elder-son-chinas-former-premier-li-peng-appointed-new
