Domestic debt up by Rs3800.7 bn, NA told

ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary Secretary for Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Privatisation Rana Muhammad Afzal on Thursday informed the National Assembly that domestic debt stock had increased by Rs3800.7 billion from 2013 to 2015.

He said the government was running fiscal deficit; therefore, instead of replaying domestic debt, it has refinanced domestic debt from the domestic market.He said amount of external debt, along with the IMF loans, repaid by the government since 2013 to the end of December 2015, was $10,739.4 million.

He said total amount paid as interest on the domestic loans since 1-6-2013 to 31-12-2013 was Rs2805.1 billion and the total amount of interest paid against external as well as IMF loans since 1-6-2013 up till end-December 2015 was $2315.6 million.

He said the government borrowed $13,611.66 million from the IMF so far, adding $2,606.66 million were borrowed from the IMF in fiscal year 2014-15 and $1005 million in year 2105-16 (July-Feb). He said $4797.26 had been borrowed from the World Bank.

Also, Parliamentary Secretary for Interior and Narcotics Control Marryam Auranzeb on Thursday informed the National Assembly that 251,624 Pakistani nationals had been repatriated to Pakistan from abroad during the tenure of the present government.

Replying to a question in the National Assembly, she said the incumbent government for the first time had chalked out Deportation Policy in 2105 and now there was no random deportation form any foreign country.

She told the National Assembly the operation against terrorists was continuing across the country under the National Action Plan (NAP). She said steps and efforts of the federal government to control incidents of terrorism in Karachi city had proved to be very effective.

Meanwhile, Members of National Assembly on Thursday called for working out an increase in their salaries in line with the members of provincial assemblies. Maunala Amir Zaman of the JUI-F, speaking in the NA, pointed out current monthly salary of Rs70,000 for an MNA was not enough to meet his family expenditures.
