Daesh Claims Responsibility For Afghanistan Mosque Explosion

By Fidel Rahmati in Khaama Press online, June 10, 2023
The Islamic State group or Daesh on Friday claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing inside a mosque in northern Badakhshan province.

On Thursday, the explosion inside Nabawi mosque in Badakhshan province killed at least 13 people and wounded 30 others during a memorial service of provincial deputy governor Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi.

The Islamic State in Khorasan Province, a regional offshoot of IS, stated in a statement late Friday that the attacker had targeted the service near the Nabawi Mosque in the city of Faizabad in the Badakhshan province on Thursday.

The statement by Daesh claimed that at least 20 senior Taliban officials were killed and 50 others were injured, higher casualty totals than those provided by the Taliban authorities.

The deputy governor of Badakhshan, Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, was killed in a car bombing on Tuesday in Faizabad, and a memorial service was organized in his honour. The Islamic State organization also claimed responsibility for the incident, which claimed the life of the deputy governor’s driver and injured ten others.

Since the Taliban seized Kabul, the Daesh group has increased its attacks on Taliban officials, foreign nationals and ordinary people.

The group has taken responsibility for several attacks across the country, particularly on Pakistani missions, Chinese travellers and the Russian embassy in Kabul.

Last year in December, the provincial police commander of Badakhshan was assassinated in a car bombing while he was on his way to work. Daesh took responsibility for the attack.
