Feni: Lance Nayek Nowsher Ali of Bangladesh Ansar was killed when a clash broke out during an anti-narcotics drive by a law enforcement team in a border area of Fulgazi upazila around 11pm on Wednesday.
Indian authorities on the other hand are saying the incident was an attack on Indian villagers by intruders from Bangladesh.
Executive Magistrate Sohel Rana, who led the team of Ansar and police in the drive, was also injured, Feni Additional Police Superintendent Kazi Moniruzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.
Rana was hacked on the hands. He was taken to Feni Modern Hospital.
BGB 4 Battalion Deputy Commander Maj ME Ashraf said that the drug peddlers had left the body of Nowsher inside the Indian territory.
“Later we held a meeting with the Indian Border Security Force authorities around 3am.”
The BSF authorities returned the body to the BGB around 5:30pm. Another man named Sumon who got stuck across the border in this incident had been charged with illegal entry and was not returned, he said.
Earlier on Thursday, BGB Commander Lt Col Mohammad Sarwar said: “Naosher entered Indian territory to save himself during the drive.”
Meanwhile, our Agartala correspondent reported that according to Tripura police, about 20 people allegedly dressed in the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Police attire launched an attack on 10-12 local Muslim families of Sidhinagar, Belonia in Tripura, close to the Feni border. The families reside along 150 metres of the zero-line.
Tripura South District SP Tapan Debbarma told the Dhaka Tribune: “The intruders initially barged into the house of one Ali Akbar and bruised him up.”
As Ali Akbar screamed for help, other locals began to come out of their houses. The intruders blank-fired to disperse the locals. The locals reportedly retaliated which pushed things to a head.
Following the clash, an individual named Naushad Miah, 57, was found lying dead. There was an Ansar ID card on his person, the official said.
The locals also caught another intruder named Suman Miah, 25 who is a resident of Dharmapur, Feni, he added.
BSF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Superintendent (SP) held a flag-meeting with concerned officials of Bangladesh on Wednesday night and on Thursday as well.
The 68 battalion of Border Security Force (BSF) has been deployed in the area.
After post-mortem, the dead body of Naushad Miah was handed over to the BGB by the BSF in the afternoon.
Suman Miah on the other hand has been produced before the Belonia Court which remanded him in jail custody till March 14. www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/2017/03/10/cross-border-tension-ansar-mans-death/
