Council Warns Govt Leaders To End Their Rift: by Mirabed Joenda in ToloNews, Nov 1, 2016

Members of the Supreme Council of Afghanistan Jihadi and National Parties at a gathering on Tuesday urged the National Unity Government (NUG) leaders to end their rift and said if it continues it will drive the country towards a crisis.

They did say they are committed to helping government leaders to end their tension.

The council said the tension between NUG leaders is because of personal interests and that they have started meddling between President Ashraf Ghani and the First Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum.

The council urged government leaders to not let Afghanistan become the victim of proxy wars and regional as well as global rivalries.

“We are concerned about the country’s situation and we continue our efforts to bring it under control,” said Sebghatullah Mujaddidi, head of the council.

“As I see the wisdom of the country’s political figures and the Afghan people, they will not let the situation be shattered,” said Mohammad Karim Khalili, a member of the council’s leadership.

“The things that are ongoing in the Middle East should not be brought to Afghanistan,” he added.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Council of Protection and Stability of Afghanistan has recently assigned a delegation to visit all government leaders within a week in order to find a way for bringing an end to the rift between the NUG leaders.

“The rift is not because of national interests; they are because of other benefits that are interpreted by them [leaders]. The first meeting will happen today [Tuesday]. The council has given a one week deadline for the delegation,” said Massoud Treshtwal, spokesman for the council.

“Our demand is that the two houses of parliament [Wolesi Jirga and Meshrano Jirga] should assign a delegation and work to end the rift between government leaders,” said Mohammad Asif Sediqi, a lawmaker.

The rift between the NUG leaders was made public after a number of senior government officials including the first VP Dostum and the president’s special envoy for reforms and good governance criticized Ghani for what they called the monopolization of power by the Presidential Palace.http://www.tolonews.com/en/afghanistan/28111-council-warns-govt-leaders-to-end-their-rift
