China said it will spare no effort to rescue two Chinese citizens kidnapped by gunmen on Wednesday in Quetta, Pakistan.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang on Thursday confirmed at a daily briefing that two Chinese citizens were abducted by unnamed gunmen in Quetta Wednesday afternoon.

China’s Embassy in Pakistan and Consulate-General in Karachi immediately activated their emergency response mechanism after learning of the kidnapping, Lu said, adding that the Chinese side has stayed in close communication with the relevant Pakistani departments and will take measures to safely rescue the two.

China will also step up efforts to safeguard the security of Chinese citizens and agencies in Pakistan, Lu said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping as of press time.

Police and other law enforcement agencies launched a search on Wednesday evening in Quetta and adjoining areas, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Wednesday.

A heavy contingent of police and those from other law enforcement agencies were seen all over the city, especially at the city’s entry and exit points and in areas near the reported site of the incident.

Deputy Quetta police inspector general Aitzaz Goraya said that they have “formed a strategy and executing it for the safe recovery of the Chinese.” http://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1048707.shtml
