Chhatra League to assist police during Khaleda’s verdict

report in The Dhaka Tribune, Feb 6, 2018 at 11.20 pm
Bangladesh Chhatra League will take position at important points of Dhaka on February 8, to help law enforcers in case miscreants try to create unrest centering on BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s verdict in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

“Chhatra League will not announce any pre-scheduled programs as we have full respect and faith in our honorable court. But we won’t allow anyone to destabilize the situation,” Chhatra League President Saifur Rahman Sohag told the Dhaka Tribune.

As part of the preparations, Chhatra League has already organized emergency meetings with its units in the capital, including the Dhaka metro, Dhaka University (DU) and Jagannath University units.

A two-hour-long closed door meeting was held at the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) conference room on Sunday. Presidents and general secretaries of the DU hall, institute, faculty and departmental units of Chhatra League were present.

Sources from the meeting said Chhatra League President Sohag and General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain instructed its leaders to be alert in all conditions and to form processions on the campus under individual units every day.

They added that the leaders said activists of DU units must be ready to face the obstacles from the day before the verdict.

“If Chhatra Dal or Shibir cadres try to create any kind of unrest, Chhatra League will go for hard line,” Chhatra League sources said.

On December 24, 2014, there were a series of clashes between BNP and Awami League centering on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s appearance at a Dhaka court, turning the Bakshibazar, Polashi and Chankharpool areas of the capital into battle zones.

At least 40 people on both sides, including ruling party lawmaker Chhabi Biswas, were injured during the clashes. www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/dhaka/2018/02/06/chhatra-league-help-police-khaledas-verdict/
