Awami League president, prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday asked the party’s members of parliament to address any gap with grassroots leaders and activists in their constituencies since, she said, the next general elections will be a participatory one.
She also told the party MPs that she believes the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will join the parliamentary polls later this year, a number of MPs said.
The prime minister made the hint of an inclusive election next time, while addressing a meeting of the Awami League’s Parliamentary Party (ALPP) at the party’s conference room in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Earlier in the day, premier Hasina assured the new ambassador of European Union (EU) of a free, fair and credible general election to be held at the end of this year.
A number of MPs who were present at the ALPP meeting said the prime minister said the next national election will be an inclusive one.
She, according to them. asked them to work sincerely in their constituencies.
“The prime minister instructed us to take steps to close the gap with the grassroots leaders and activists in our areas and remove internal conflicts,” UNB quoted a young ruling party MP as saying.
Sheikh Hasina was also quoted to have said: “The next election will be participatory and the BNP, too, will join the race.”
She also instructed all MPs including female members to resolve the disputes in their respective areas before the next general elections, an MP said.
The AL president was quoted to have said that all the female members of reserved seats would not be retained after the next general elections.
According to UNB: The meeting also discussed the Constitution (17th Amendment) Bill 2018, which will be passed in Parliament next week for keeping aside 50 parliamentary seats exclusively for women for another 25 years.
In this regard, the prime minister asked the MPs to be present in the House on the day the bill will be passed.
