B’desh: Journalist arrested in Dhaka

Report in Dhaka Tribune, May 2, 2017
‘Natun Somoy’ Executive Editor Ahmed Razu has been accused of running fabricated news reports
The executive editor of the online newspaper “Natun Somoy” has been arrested after the Walton Group accused him of tarnishing the company’s image by deliberately running fabricated reports.
Ahmed Razu was arrested from his Segunbagicha office on Sunday night, police’s Ramna zone Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hasan Sardar told the Dhaka Tribune on Monday.
Razu was an employee of Walton-owned newspaper Rising BD until he was fired.
Razu had approved a number of news articles on Natun Somoy which criticised the after-sales service of Walton, particularly regarding their phone and motorcycles. In response to the articles, his former employer Walton Group filed a case with Ramna police under the ICT Act.
Inspector Arif Hossain (Investigations) produced Razu before a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court and asked for one day in remand. Judge Moinuddin Siddique granted the remand and rejected a bail petition. http://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/crime/2017/05/01/journalist-arrested-dhaka/
