Explosions and gunfire rang out after RAB began a raid on a suspected militant hideout on a sandbar on the Padma River in Chapainawabganj, a commanding officer has said.
The tin building caught fire early on Tuesday amid the gunfire and explosion, said Rajshahi RAB Commanding Officer Mahabub Alam.
Though the fire was put out, RAB personnel have been unable to get inside. They are waiting for a bomb disposal unit to sweep the location.
RAB-5 personnel surrounded the building around 4am, after receiving information that militants were hiding out at the location, said Alam.
“The building was cordoned off and a megaphone was used to call on the militants to surrender. But they opened fire and began throwing grenades. RAB retaliated.”
The fire broke out after nearly an hour of intermittent exchange of gunfire.
RAB Commanding Officer Alam said that they did not know the building owner’s name and they were unsure how many were inside.
More information would be available after the bomb disposal unit completes its work, he said.https://bdnews24.com/bangladesh/2017/11/28/explosions-gunfire-during-raid-on-chapainawabganj-militant-hideout
