B’desh: Another indigenous student leader picked up

Dhaka Tribune report, April 30, 2017
Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) has claimed that its Panchhari upazila unit President Jewel Chakma was picked up by some army personnel Saturday night.
Panchhari police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Jabbar acknowledged Jewel’s detention, and said that the army were conducting drives in different areas with him.
The OC added that Jewel had two extortion cases filed against him with the police station.
The detention came amid protests over the death of Romel Chakma, PCP’s Naniarchar unit general secretary in Rangamati, on April 19.

Sonayan Chakma, Khagrachhari district unit President of UPDF-backed PCP, told reporters on Sunday that an army team of Khagrachhari Sadar and Panchhari sub-zone had picked up Jewel from one of his relative’s houses in Panchhari the previous night.
“Jewel’s family members have not yet been informed of his whereabouts,” he claimed.
The OC’s phone was found switched off when contacted around 7:15pm.
However, sources at the police station confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that Jewel had been handed over to them around 6:15pm.

PCP leader Romel, an HSC examinee, was picked up by the army personnel of Naniarchar camp on April 5 for questioning in two arson cases on suspicion. He was handed over to the police the next morning and later admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Leaders of UPDF and PCP, human rights groups and different student bodies have demanded a judicial inquiry into the death of Romel and an end to harassment of the indigenous peoples during the ongoing joint drives in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.http://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/nation/2017/04/30/another-pcp-leader-picked-army-men/
