The acting governor of Badakhshan province, whose formal position was deputy governor, Mawlawi Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, was killed in a vehicle bomb blast that occurred on Tuesday morning in Faizabad, the provincial capital, an official said.
Mauzuddin Ahmadi, head of Badakhshan’s department of information and culture said that a vehicle bomb targeted the convoy of the deputy governor in Mahkama square of Faizabad.
The attack left one other person killed and six people wounded, according to Ahmadi.
“A car full of explosives driven by the suicide attacker blew up in front of the vehicle of Mawlawi Ahmad Ahmadi, deputy and acting Minister of Badakhshan, killing the deputy governor and his driver,” he said.
The witness said that some nearby residents were damaged in the blast.
“An incident happened there. I didn’t understand it. I fainted then and I suffered a slight injury under my eye,” said Mohammad Nazim, a wounded person.
“I was sitting here. The sound of a blast was heard and my brother came to me, his neck and feet were bloody and we took them to the hospital,” said Hizbullah, a resident.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
In December 2022, a blast targeted a vehicle in the city of Faizabad, Badakhshan province, killing the head of the provincial security department.
The attack was claimed by Daesh.
