Asfandyar sees trust-deficit behind strained Pak-Afghan ties

CHARSADDA: Awami National Party President Asfandyar Wali Khan on Thursday said that reason and logic were prerequisites for survival of the democratic system.

Speaking at a party workers’ convention in Umarzai village, he urged the political leadership of Pakistan to approach the national and international issues with logical thinking.

He said the region could face dangerous situation if Pakistan’s leadership failed to steer the country out of the current crisis-like situation. The ANP chief blamed the trust-deficit in Pakistan and Afghanistan for the strained relations between the two countries. He linked human development and prosperity to the restoration of peace in the region.

Asfandyar Wali said that peace was the only solution to the problems of the two countries. “It is responsibility of the state to find out the reasons behind the Afghans’ anger towards Pakistan,” he said.

He argued that nobody speaks ill of their hosts, but Afghans are blaming Pakistan for their problems despite the fact that Pakistan hosted them for 35 long years. He urged the government to merge Fata with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa before the next general elections so that the tribespeople have representation in the provincial assembly.

“The only solution to redress the grievances of the tribespeople is to give them representation in the Khber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly,” he maintained. Asfandyar Wali said that Pervez Khattak had declared the ANP government as the darkest era in history. “May I remind him that he had been minister in the previous ANP-PPP coalition government,” he pointed out. He said his party’s government had launched development projects without getting loans while the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government was busy inaugurating the previous government’s projects. The ANP chief said the PTI had not launched any mega project but the province was still burdened with loans. He said that China-Pakistan Economic Corridor was game-changer for the region, but Pakhtuns were being deprived of benefits from the project.
