Arsa commander killed in gunfight with APBn

A leader of the Rohingya insurgent group Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa) was shot dead in a gunfight with Armed Police Battalion personnel in a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Tuesday morning.

The deceased was Abdul Majeed alias Lalaiya, 32, a top commander of Arsa.

APBn Assistant Superintendent of Police (media), Md Faruk Ahmed, said: “Based on a tip-off, an operation was carried out at Camp No 19 on Tuesday morning. Arsa members opened fire at the APBn upon sensing their presence. The APBn also fired back in self-defence. Later, the body of Laliya was recovered from the spot.”

“During this incident, three Arsa members were arrested. A firearm and two rounds of ammunition were seized from their possession. Two policemen were also injured in this incident,” he added.

The Arsa members arrested are Mohammad Taher, 45, Jamal Hossain, 20, and Liaqat Ali, 25.

Ukhiya police station OC Sheikh Mohammad Ali said a joint police operation is underway to catch the attackers.
