ANP asks president to quit after SC verdict in Justice Isa case

Report in Dawn, October 26th, 2020
PESHAWAR: Awami National Party provincial president Aimal Wali Khan has said that after the verdict of Supreme Court in Justice Qazi Faez Isa case, President Arif Alvi should quit his office forthwith.

“President Alvi has no moral justification to remain in presidency and he should resign after Supreme Court’s judgment in Justice Isa case,” he told a public meeting here on Sunday.

On this occasion former MPA of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Yasin Khan Khalil formally joined ANP along with his supporters.

Aimal Wali said that the ‘selected’ prime minister and president should resign. He added that days of the government had been numbered.

He said that Pakistan Democratic Movement was struggling for true democracy in the country. He said that struggle of PDM would continue till its logical end.

He said that PDM was launched to restore sanctity of vote and voter. “PDM is struggling for the survival of democracy and sanctity of vote,” he added.

Aimal Wali said that PDM, an alliance of 11 political parties, would hold major rally in Peshawar on November 22 and a sea of followers of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan would throng the venue of the meeting.

He urged workers to start preparations for the rally.

He said that ANP would hold public rallies across the province to mobilise people for the Peshawar rally. He said that his party would soon organise protest rallies against price hike and unemployment.

Expressing concerns over spike in incidents of targeted killing and acts of terrorism in different parts of the country, Aimal Wali said that security agencies should fulfil their responsibilities to eradicate terrorism and extremism.

He said that incidents of targeted killing, extortion and kidnapping for ransom were on the rise while a journalist was kidnapped in Karachi. He said that Pakistan remained in grey list of Financial Action Task Force.

He said that visit of Afghanistan former prime minister Gulbadin Hekmatyar to Islamabad and his participation in public meetings was a big question mark.

He asked Mr Hekmatyar to explain his position for participating in a public meeting organised by Jamaat-i-Islami.

“The government should clarify whether Pakistan is perusing its three decades old policy by allowing Hekmatyar to participate in public meetings? Whether JI and Hekmatyar want to flare up violence in Afghanistan,” he questioned.

He said that ANP fully supported the ongoing peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban. The peace process should be Afghan-led and Afghan-own.

Aimal Wali demanded of the government to provide shelter to militancy-affected people of tribal districts. He said that government failed to fulfil its commitments with the people of tribal districts.

He asked the government to exempt people of tribal districts from all taxes for 10 years and restore their seats in universities and professional institutions.
