Amnesty’s statement intended to create discontent in the army: Foreign Minister

report in The Daily Star, Jun 28, 2023
Some organisations are supplying false information to the United Nations with an intent to prevent army personnel from joining peacekeeping missions, create discontent in the armed forces, and thereby subdue Bangladesh, said Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen yesterday.

Asked about Amnesty International urging the UN not to take in human rights violators in peacekeeping mission, Momen said they (Amnesty International) did not do it with an honest intent. “They don’t actually mean what they say; their purpose is not noble. Their purpose is to subdue Bangladesh.”

“They [army personnel] go on missions and earn some money. If they are prevented from joining the missions, there will be discontent in the army,” said Momen.

The UN takes in peacekeepers after scrutiny, he said, adding, “Our 1.86 lakh armed forces personnel have been helping in peacekeeping at various places.”

The minister made the remark while talking to journalists after distributing prime minister’s gifts to the poor at Khadimnagar Union in Sylhet today.

“Many domestic and foreign powers work to subdue countries that make progress. For example, Libya, Iraq, and Syria were developed and very peaceful countries in the region. They have been destroyed.”When you grow, you will get more enemies,” he said.
