Amnesty International on Sunday asked the United Nations Human Right Council to create an independent fact-finding mechanism to investigate the violations and abuses committed by the caretaker regime in Afghanistan.
To support the victims, the evidence against human rights violations must be gathered, and provided at the international level, according to Amnesty International.
Amnesty International, in its statement, has highlighted killings, arbitrary detentions, and violations against ordinary people, human rights activists, and university students in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime.
Furthermore, the organization has reported on the killing of ethnic minorities, particularly the Hazaras in Ghazni, Daikundi, and Ghor provinces, which is a clear example of a war crime – whereas the Taliban officials have not taken any steps to investigate such cases.
Amnesty International has assessed the documents of eight detention cases in which Panjshiri men were humiliated by Taliban members. The Taliban group confirms the detention of at least 87 men in Panjshir and said that the majority of these individuals were detained after the outbreak of conflict between the Islamic Emirate forces and National Resistance (NRF) Front fighters.
“The human rights situation in Afghanistan has rapidly deteriorated, and the Islamic Emirate authorities continue to commit violence and harassment every day,” Agnes Callamard, Secretary General, Amnesty International said.
Callamard added, “the international community should create an international fact-finding mechanism to maintain the evidence under the instructions of the UN, and to ensure that independent investigations and prosecutions are conducted.”
Richard Bennett, UN’s Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan will soon submit his research to the fifty-second session of the UN Human Rights Council, and the member states will discuss the human rights situation in Afghanistan. https://www.khaama.com/amnesty-international-calls-on-un-to-investigate-human-rights-violations-in-afghanistan/
