SUKKUR: An alert was sounded in the Jacobabad district jail and security in and around the prison was beefed up on Thursday when a number of prisoners defied orders of the jail police, held a noisy protest and climbed to the rooftop to register their indignation over several issues.
Angry prisoners also damaged flower vases during the episode.
No undertrial prisoner could be taken to courts for the scheduled hearing of their cases due to the unrest.
Senior officers of the jail police made hectic efforts to pacify the situation and managed to persuade the slogan-raising prisoners to peacefully discuss the issues so that they could be resolved.
The prisoners told them that they were not being provided due facilities as per the jail manual. They complained that drinking water was not being provided to them on time and the food being served to them was also of poor quality. They alleged that the jail police were exempting from work those prisoners who would give them money.
The officials held out the assurance that all their grievances would be looked into and their complaints addressed.
After several hours of unrest, the prisoners ended their protest and went back to their barracks.
