Abduction mystery: edit in Daily Times, Feb 16, 2016

The government of Kabul has expressed deep concern over the abduction of former Afghanistan governor Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi, who was kidnapped on February 12 from a marketplace in Islamabad where he came to do some shopping with his grandson. After two days of the incident on February 14, Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry summoned Pakistan’s envoy to Kabul and condemned the incident. Kabul urged Pakistan to make all-out efforts for an early recovery of the Afghan politician. The Afghan leader had earlier arrived in Islamabad, along with his family, to get visas to travel to the UK as the British embassy in Kabul does not directly issue visas to Afghan nationals.

So far the Islamabad police are clueless about the kidnappers and the purpose of abduction is still not known. It is not clear wether this is a case of abduction for ransom or for any other reason. On the basis of available details, it can be presumed that the abduction was pre-planned as someone was keeping an eye on the ex-governor and kidnapped him when they saw an opportunity. The involvement of the Taliban, who are usual suspects in such cases, cannot be ruled out. There is a possibility that the Afghan Taliban have kidnapped him for ulterior motives. Neither Pakistan nor Afghanistan had any interest in abducting him as Mr Wahidi was a former governor and no longer in office or power. The Afghan government itself is perturbed and wants quick recovery of Mr Wahidi.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are already passing through a critical phase of their relationship. Ties between both neighbouring countries are often troubled over Kabul blaming Islamabad for sponsoring the Taliban militants. This incident can further sour bilateral relations between Islamabad and Kabul. It is the responsibility of Pakistan’s security agencies to find the missing dignitary. He is our guest and must not be used by miscreants for the fulfilment of any nefarious agenda. The police need to bust the group either of criminals or terrorists that is involved in the kidnapping. If there is any Afghan connection related to the involvement of the Taliban, it must be unearthed as soon as possible. Pakistan needs to fulfil its responsibility and use all resources to take immediate steps for the recovery of Mr Wahidi and investigate which group was involved in his abduction. It is the Pakistan government’s duty to rescue him from the clutches of the kidnappers and solve this abduction mystery.http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/editorial/16-Feb-2016/abduction-mystery
